Valentin de Boulogne

Born in Coulommiers, France, Valentin likely received his early training from his father and uncle, both painters, before moving to Rome by 1620.¹

In Rome, he studied under Simon Vouet and was deeply influenced by Caravaggio and Bartolomeo Manfredi, adopting their dramatic tenebrist style.¹

He died in 1632, reportedly after bathing in the freezing waters of the Fontana del Tritone following a night of heavy drinking.¹
