The 90th Anniversary of his Birth Hirayama Ikuo The Eternal Silk Road

The great Nihonga painter of the postwar era,Hirayama Ikuo (1930-2009), left a significant mark in the world. This year would have marked his 90th birthday. Hirayama built a solid reputation in the art world in Japan through the Nihon Bijutsuin, an academy that has promoted Nihonga art through a biennial exhibition for more than a century. The exhibition of Hirayama's painting, "The Transmission of Buddhism" (1959, housed in the Saku Municipal Museum of Modern Art) set a lifelong theme in his artwork the Silk Road as a path for the dissemination of Buddhism. After visiting Turkey for the first time in 1966, Hirayama spent the next 40 years creating art as he traveled to numerous destinations on the Silk Road himself on over a hundred plus dozens more trips. This exhibition introduces his major works and finished works from locations along the Silk Road that bear his footprints. They tell historical stories of a path eternally filled with adventure.
