本展は、国立美術館連携事業「国立美術館 コレクション・プラス」の第１回事業として採択され、実施したものである。刑部人（1906-1978）は、栃木県下都賀郡都賀町（現在の栃木市）に生まれた画家で、日本の風景を様々な角度から描いた。その根底には19世紀フランス美術、特にギュスターヴ・クールベ(1819-1877)をはじめとした風景画家たちへの憧憬があり、その影響は刑部の作品にも表れている。本展では、国立西洋美術館所蔵のギュスターヴ・クールベ作品２点を借用し、当館所蔵の刑部人作品と併せて展示をすることで、その影響の大きさについて検証した。
