本展は、2023 年1月に逝去した竹工芸家、勝城蒼鳳(かつしろ そうほう 1934-2023)を追悼する展覧会である。栃木県那須郡高林村(現・那須塩原市)に生まれた勝城は、自らが目にした自然の景色を伸びやかで力強い唯一無二の竹の造形へと昇華させ、2005 年、重要無形文化財「竹工芸」保持者、いわゆる「人間国宝」に認定された。自然から受けた感動を「俳句」に詠み、極限まで抽象化し、そのイメージにあわせて新たな技法をも生み出しながら造形化する勝城は、まさに竹の“アーティスト”といえる。
