岐阜県ゆかりの江戸時代の修行僧円空は、人々の幸せを願って、全国を行脚しながら、かず多くの新仏像を残したとされています。円空の作品は、力強い美しさや、慈愛の心を感じさせ、今でも私たちに感動ややすらぎを与えてくれています。岐阜県では、郷土の偉人である円空を彷彿とさせるような顕著な業績をおさめている芸術家を顕彰することにより、芸術文化を振興することを目的に、平成11年度に「円空大賞」を制定しました。第12回円空大賞展では、受賞者である5名の現代作家の優れた作品を、円空仏とともに展示いたします。現代の最高傑作と円空仏が織りなすアートの世界をおたのしみください。
