文化財保存学を修めた研究者でもある向井は、膨大な資料の調査と検証を重ね、先人が創り出した作品を現代に甦らせています。また、映画やドラマの制作にも関わり、大河ドラマ「べらぼう〜蔦重栄華乃夢噺〜」では江戸時代の絵師の筆遣いを俳優に指導したり、劇中画を制作したりするなど活躍著しい作家です。自身の創作においては、高度な技法を使いこなし、透明感ある色彩、精緻な描写と繊細な線で自然や生命を表現しています。花枝は日本画特有の写実性、そこにとまる小鳥や虫は図鑑のような細密性―、そのわずかなズレに気が付くと、楚々とした花鳥画が一気に現代性を帯びて迫ってきます。虚実が混在する向井の世界は、現代の我々に伝統とリアルを考えさせます。日本画に欠かせない絵絹は、各務原市産が国内シェアの大部分を占めています。向井は、絵絹や美濃和紙を用いて日本画の制作の過程を公開し、さらに、当館所蔵の川合玉堂《野末の秋》を調査し、忠実な模写を完成させ、ワークショップへと展開します。AiMでの向井の活動は、日本で生まれた絵画の豊かな流れを現代につなぐものとなるでしょう。
