建築家・安藤忠雄氏が設計したコンクリート打放しの美しい美術館で、バルコニーからは立地を活かした「水景庭園」を望むことができます。館内には、創設者の加藤達雄が収集したフランス近現代絵画や、中国の金銅仏、ペルシャの陶器など、国内外の貴重な美術品が幅広く展示されています。

漱石が熊本五高の教え子・橋口貢に宛てた自筆の絵はがき。当館では30葉を収蔵。

中国・北魏時代のもので、煕平（516〜518）の銘を持つ青銅鍍金の菩薩像。
