Gerard David

Gerard David was born around 1460 in Oudewater, in the Prince-Bishopric of Utrecht, Holy Roman Empire.¹

Gerard David moved to Bruges in 1483, where he established his artistic career.²

Born in Oudewater, Netherlands, he trained in Haarlem before moving to Bruges in 1483. His early style was strongly influenced by the Haarlem masters.³

Gerard David joined the painters' guild in Bruges in 1484 and was mainly active there.⁴

After the death of Hans Memling in 1494, Gerard David became Bruges' leading painter.²

Upon the death of Hans Memling in 1494, David became the leading painter in Bruges. He also served as the dean of the Guild of Saint Luke in 1501.³

In 1496, Gerard David married Cornelia Cnoop, daughter of the dean of the goldsmiths' guild.²

His masterpiece 'The Virgin among the Virgins' was donated by the artist himself to the Carmelite Nuns of Sion in Bruges; it is now in the Rouen museum.³

Gerard David may have been the Meester gheraet van brugghe who became a master of the Antwerp guild in 1515.²

He visited Antwerp in 1515 and was impressed by the vitality of Quentin Matsys' work, attempting to preserve Bruges traditions while incorporating new influences.³

He was highly successful and likely operated two workshops in Bruges and Antwerp, which was an exceptional achievement for a painter of that era.³

Around 1519, Gerard David experienced a personal conflict with his apprentice Ambrosius Benson over collected works, leading to a prison sentence.²

A scandalous episode survives where he was involved in a legal dispute with his apprentice Ambrosius Benson over the return of materials, leading to David's imprisonment.³

AugGerard David died on August 13, 1523, at the age of 62–63, in Bruges.¹

His name was forgotten by the 17th century, but he was rediscovered in the 19th century after researcher W.H. James Weale found archival documents about him.³
