Timeline

1832

Studied in Copenhagen from 1832; initially rejected by the Royal Academy, he was admitted the following year and studied there for five years, developing his talent.1

1837

Upon visiting Düsseldorf in 1837, he liked it so much that he settled there, establishing himself as a prominent member of the Düsseldorf school of painting.1

1842

He traveled Norway studying folk costumes, utensils, and oral traditions, resulting in realistic yet idealized masterpieces of Norwegian Romantic Nationalism.1

1843

Met 18-year-old Hans Gude in 1843, forming a close friendship and collaboration where Gude painted landscapes and Tidemand painted the figures.1

A journey to Norway in 1843 sparked his interest in national history and folk culture, leading him to portray peasant life with a new sense of dignity.1

1845

Married his childhood sweetheart Claudine in 1845; they lived in Düsseldorf, but suffered the tragedy of losing their only son at age 28 in 1874.1

1848

In 1848, King Oscar I commissioned him to paint a series on Norwegian peasant life, 'Bondeliv', for the royal palace of Oscarshall.1

As seen in 'The Bridal Procession in Hardanger', he visualized Norwegian identity by placing narrative-rich figures within expansive landscapes.1
