In the early 1640s, he studied at Rembrandt's studio in Amsterdam, becoming one of his most talented pupils.1

He moved to Delft in the early 1650s and joined the painters' guild in 1652, becoming a key figure of the Delft School.1

Due to the explosion, only about a dozen of his paintings have survived, making his extant oeuvre extremely rare.1

He died at age 32 in the 1654 Delft gunpowder magazine explosion, which destroyed his studio and many of his paintings.1
