Timeline
JanChristoffer Wilhelm Eckersberg was born on January 2, 1783, in Blåkrog, Denmark.1
Christoffer Wilhelm Eckersberg was accepted into the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts in Copenhagen in 1803.1
Between 1811 and 1812, he studied under the Neoclassicist Jacques-Louis David in Paris, where he improved his skills in painting the human form by following the principle of painting after nature and the antique.2
During his three-year stay in Rome starting in 1813, he developed a close friendship with sculptor Bertel Thorvaldsen and was deeply influenced by the bright southern light, producing exceptional landscape studies.2
After his first divorce, he married Elisabeth Juel, daughter of painter Jens Juel. Following her death, he married her sister Susanne, maintaining close ties within the artistic community of the Academy.2
As a professor at the Academy, he revitalized teaching by taking students into the field to do direct studies from nature, a practice that introduced direct natural observation into Danish art.2
Granted access to the Copenhagen Naval Station in 1819, he observed sailors swimming naked, using them as anatomical models for his paintings of Greek and Roman antiquity.2
With a passion for ships, he even sailed as far as the English Channel at age 56. His firsthand experience at sea transformed his marine paintings from calm depictions to dynamic works focused on movement and waves.2
Driven by his interest in marine painting, he studied perspective deeply and published a dissertation on linear perspective in 1841, teaching the subject to ensure harmonious compositions in art.2
