Timeline
Born into a famous Antwerp family of artists, he was trained by his father, Frans the Elder. He became the most prolific and successful member of the family, operating a large workshop.1
He became a master in the Antwerp Guild of Saint Luke in 1605 and served as its deacon in 1616. By 1607, he had established a residence and workshop in the city center, achieving early success.1
He married Elisabeth Plaquet in 1607 with special permission, likely because their first son was born shortly after. That son, Frans III, became a painter known as the 'Rubensian Francken.'1
He signed as 'the Younger' until his father's death in 1616, and later as 'the Old' to distinguish himself from his son, Frans III, reflecting the family's multi-generational artistic legacy.1
He established the new genre of 'Kunstkammer' or gallery paintings, depicting rooms filled with art and curiosities. These works reflected the intellectual preoccupations and collecting culture of the era.1
