Joseph Farquharson
Timeline
His father, a doctor and laird, allowed him to paint only on Saturdays. After receiving his first paints at 12, he exhibited his first work at the Royal Scottish Academy just a year later.1
He studied under landscape painter Peter Graham, whose influence is unmistakable. He bypassed Edinburgh and Glasgow for London to reach a wider audience and secure patrons.1
A watershed in his career was studying under Carolus-Duran in Paris from 1880. He learned to use the brush directly, focusing on form and color, resulting in richly handled paintwork.1
In 1885, he traveled to North Africa and painted scenes along the Nile. While famous for snow, these Orientalist works demonstrate his exceptional sense of color.1
He inherited the title of Laird of Finzean in 1918 and was known as 'The Painting Laird,' combining a prolific artistic career with his role as a Scottish landowner.1
