Timeline
Andrei Rublev (c. 1360–1430) was a preeminent medieval Russian icon painter and monk, later canonized as a saint by the Russian Orthodox Church in 1988.1
He is believed to have been trained by the Byzantine master Theophanes the Greek, with whom he collaborated on the Cathedral of the Annunciation in 1405.1
He frequently collaborated with Daniel Chorny, notably on the frescoes of the Dormition Cathedral in Vladimir and the Trinity Cathedral.1
In his masterpiece 'The Trinity', he removed the figures of Abraham and Sarah to focus the composition entirely on the Mystery of the Trinity.1
He spent his final years at the Andronikov Monastery in Moscow, painting the Saviour Cathedral frescoes; the site now houses a museum in his name.1
In 1551, the Stoglavi Sobor promulgated Rublev's icon style as the official model for all future church painting.1
In 1966, Andrei Tarkovsky directed the film 'Andrei Rublev', portraying the artist as a world-historic figure during a turbulent period in Russia.1
