Frédéric Bazille

Born in 1841 to a wealthy wine merchant family in Montpellier, Bazille's affluent background allowed him to provide crucial financial support to his struggling artist friends, helping to sustain the early Impressionist circle.¹

While pursuing painting, Bazille also studied medicine to please his family. Moving to Paris in 1862, he met Renoir and Sisley at Gleyre's studio. After failing his medical exams in 1864, he committed to painting full-time.¹

Painted at age 23, 'The Pink Dress' features his cousin Thérèse. The composition, showing her from behind gazing at the sunlit landscape of Montpellier, creates a serene yet powerful impression.¹

A key feature of Bazille's style was placing figures within landscapes painted en plein air. As seen in 'The Pink Dress,' he merged sunlit landscapes with figure painting, establishing a style that prefigured Impressionism.¹

Painted between 1867 and 1868, 'Family Reunion' is his most famous work. It depicts his relatives in the shade of a terrace near Montpellier on a near-life-size scale, masterfully capturing the contrast of light and shadow.¹

In 1870, Bazille volunteered for a Zouave regiment during the Franco-Prussian War. He died in battle at age 28 in November of that year while leading an assault after his commanding officer was injured.¹

His studio on Rue de la Condamine was a vital hub for Impressionist painters. Bazille painted the studio itself, documenting his interactions with Monet, Manet, and Renoir, as well as the artistic environment of the time.¹
