Timeline

1775

At 14, she moved in with her brother-in-law Jean-Honoré Fragonard and became his pupil, developing her own artistic talent based on his drawings.1

She lived in the Louvre with the Fragonards for about 30 years, allowing her to be inspired by the great artworks of the past and present housed there.1

1778

In 1778, she created nine etchings with Fragonard; historians now believe she was the sole artist of five of them, demonstrating her early technical mastery.1

1785

By 1785, she had established a reputation as a gifted genre painter, becoming the first French woman to do so in a field typically dominated by men.1

1808

In 1808, Napoleon I purchased her painting 'The Clemency of Napoleon.' Her patrons also included Louis XVIII and various members of the upper class.1
